MOSCOW – Brent Hayden of Vancouver collected his second silver medal at the World Cup swimming stop in Moscow on Saturday finishing second in the men’s 200-metre freestyle.

Alexander Sokhorukov of Russia won the gold medal in 1:42.13, Hayden followed in 1:42.25 and Darian Townsend of South Africa was third in 1:42.41. On Friday, Hayden took the silver in the 100 freestyle in Canadian short course record time.

“Ultimately I wanted to win but it was still a pretty good time for me,” said Hayden about his 200 freestyle on Saturday. “I haven’t done a whole lot of racing since this summer so this meet was a good chance to figure out where my body is and see what I could do.”

Prior to Friday’s 100 freestyle, Hayden hadn’t competed since helping Canada to world short course records in the 4x200 freestyle and 4x100 medley relay at the British Grand Prix in August.

“The biggest challenge at the start of the new season is regaining your confidence,” said Hayden. “My performance yesterday in the 100 helped a lot and I really attacked my 200 today as hard as I could. I could barely get out of the pool after the race so I know I left everything in there.”

Hayden also raced in the 50 freestyle later on Saturday and placed eighth in 21.80. Roland Schoeman of South Africa won the gold in a World Cup record 20.88. Evgeniy Lagunov of Russia was second in 21.16 and Stefan Nystrand of Sweden third in 21.23.

More than 25 nations competed at the two-day competition at the Olympiskii complex.Hayden was the sole Canadian at the meet.

Eleven other Canadian swimmers will join Hayden for the World Cups in Stockholm on November 10-11 and Berlin November 14-15.

The other Canadians headed to Europe are for the men Stefan Hirniak and Blake Worsly, both of Victoria, Scott Dickens of Vancouver, Matt Hawes of Ottawa, Charles Francis of Montreal and Karl Wolk of Calgary.

For the women, Tanya Hunks of Vancouver, Katerine Savard of Quebec City, Jennifer Beckberger of Ajax, Ont., Tera van Beilen of Oakville, Ont., and Alexandra Gabor of Whitehorse.
